Nearly everyone has heard the hype about social media marketing. It is the new Cinderella of the marketing world. Is it as good as everybody says? Do you need to be involved? Is it as beneficial as everyone says? The answers to these questions will be dependent upon your time, your energy and what you consider beneficial as well as whether you are a one man show or have employees or can hire out the brunt of work that must be done.
With the many sites that are popping up and the number of things you must do to be noticed I suggest that you start with the 7 ideas below. You can certainly do more if you wish but I believe these will get you off and running.

  1. Start a blog. Blogging may not be the sexiest of marketing techniques but it does allow you to tell your customer's whatever you want and also allows them to comment on your thoughts. This opens up dialogue and allows you and your customers to learn more about each other. With the number of free blogging options available the only thing this will cost you is time.
  2. Comment on other blogs. By commenting on other blogs you are creating relationships with blog owners and their customer's. It also forces you to read what others in your industry are saying and allows you to comment on that. You are becoming part of a community. That community is the one that will be buying your products so be thoughtful, helpful and knowledgeable.
  3. Share Photos.  Depending upon your niche there are any number of ways to make photos work for you. If you are in construction you can show before and after photos. If you have a pet niche then naturally photos of pets are a great pull. Maybe you are more into information marketing. You could show your lifestyle before and after your success. Be creative, it is not hard to come up with ideas you can share with pictures.
  4. Share Videos.  Create marketing videos and distribute them on sites like YouTube, Google Video, DailyMotion, iFilm, MySpace and many others. By utilizing these sites you keep your own bandwidth down and take advantage of the vast numbers of people who visit these sites. Did you know that YouTube actually receives more hits that Google? How's that for marketing power. Even mainstream local search engines like City Search is embracing video ads in their listings.
  5. Use StumbleUpon, Digg, de.lirio.us, del.icio.us and other social bookmarking sites.  Many more of these types of sites are popping up everyday and can drive traffic to your site. More traffic equals more sales.
  6. Join groups and mailing lists.  Wherever your customer's are is where you need to be. Yahoo Groups and Google Groups have thousands of people who have created groups for nearly everything. Why not join these groups and become an active member. This can only increase your ability to bring people to your site.
  7. Join Forums.  Forums are great ways to interact with people who have similar interests. Youcan find forums about nearly every topic imaginable. In most forums you can create a signature which will once again allow you to send traffic to your site.
As easy as these ideas are they do require time and effort. The more time you spend the better your results will be but you must determine whether you can spend the amount of time it will take. This is the caveat. You can always hire out for some of these ideas or have your employees take on these tasks. The benefits of using these social media marketing ideas are good. You will gain traffic, recognition and in the end sales.
